The Animals
In the cold of winter we have a few less animals than during the growing season. Right now farm workers include (but are most certainly not limited to):
Cattle - Cows and calves, heifers, and steers (FYI for non-farmers a heifer is a young female who has not yet had a calf, when she has a calf she is then a cow. A steer is a castrated bull. Steers are typically the class of cattle harvested for beef on this farm and in general)
Sheep - Ewes and lambs, the wether and the ram (Ewes are adult female sheep and lambs are their offspring under 1 year of age, a wether is a castrated male older than 1 yr)
Pigs - Perse the sow Spike the boar and seven young pigs born in June
Chickens - Hens and the rooster and pullets (young females who have not yet started to lay)
Soil micro & macrofauna - from bacteria to earthworms they are all extremely hard workers!
Bees and other insects - from pollinating to feeding chickens, insects are an often overlooked but crucial piece of any healthy ecosystem
Wildlife - a respected and thriving component of the natural system
